Community Connections

ORP cultivates a love and active interest in opera using a mix of accessible performances and public education classes focusing on the art form's craft. Our vision is the map for the industry-wide cultural change we work toward.

We contribute to broader efforts to achieve equity in the MN arts community by developing programming that addresses the financial and cultural barriers to participating in opera and cultivating a more diverse opera community within MN. Specific actions include Pay-As-Able public events, integration of professional and amateur singers, and programming repertoire that reflects Opera Reading participants. Performances and classes are casual events held in casual venues that foster connections between artists and audiences. These events serve as opportunities for attendees to learn about foreign languages, stories from diverse cultures, and the artistry of opera.

In addition, ORP commits to increasing diversity in opera through the IDEA Fellowship, now in its third year. IDEA strengthens opportunities for Minnesota-based singers of color, LGBTQIA+, and singers with a disability, all of whom are underrepresented in professional opera. IDEA encourages the uniqueness of underrepresented voices and supports these artists in their pursuit to learn and create freely.
